Vietnam is one of the best countries in the world to travel in if you are a food lover. During our three months travel in Vietnam we tried everything from the amazing Vietnamese street food, to authentic Vietnamese Italian pizza and delicious Vietnamese chocolate.
Be sure to not miss the famous Vietnamese dishes the baguette sandwich Banh Mi, the noodle soup Pho, the spring rolls Goi Cuon, the pancake dish Banh Xeo and the Hanoi specialty Bun Cha, a tasty dish that both Barack Obama and Anthony Bourdain fell in love with together in Hanoi.
In this Food Travel Guide we’re diving into the Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City’s food and chocolate scene. Expect to start carving for Banh Mi, Pizza and the Vietnamese Chocolate Marou!

We can’t really express in words how much we love the Vietnamese Baguette Sandwich. Maybe the fact that Marion had a Banh Mi tattoo made in the end of our trip says a lot. Banh Mi is a baguette bread usually filled with vegetables like pickled carrots, green papaya, coriander, cucumber, spring onion, various meat, paté, fried egg and chili sauce. However, there are many different versions of Banh Mi. If you are vegan or vegetarian just go for a veggie one. The Banh Mi Sandwich was born in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City in the late 1950’s but today you can find them all over Vietnam. If you like us are travelling on a low budget, cheap street food like Banh Mi is a good choice. Sometimes you can find them for as little as 10 000 VND. For us this was the perfect breakfast together with an Vietnamese Ice Coffee or Vietnamese tea. Or as a late snack with a cold Saigon Beer. See our YouTube video where we’re trying out Banh Mi in Saigon!
The most famous Banh Mi place in Saigon is:
Banh Mi Huynh Hoa
Address: 26 Lê Thị Riêng, Phường Phạm Ngũ Lão, Quận 1, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh 700000, Vietnam
We love to eat the local food when we travel. It’s usually cheap, delicious and at the same time a great way to explore the culture of a country. However, if you travel for a long time it’s hard to not start craving for pizza at some point. Especially for a couple like us where one of us is Italian! In Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City you can find pizza chains like Pizza Hut, Domino’s and The Pizza Company, but we had read positive reviews about a pizza restaurant called Pizza 4P’s. Except Saigon they also have restaurants in Hanoi and Danang. It is very famous so make a reservation if you don’t want to wait for a table. The pizzas are really tasty but they come with a hefty price tag. Expect to pay 200 000-350 000 VND for a pizza. For that price you can have 20 Banh Mi instead. But if you want to splurge on yourself Pizza 4P’s is a great choice!
Pizza 4P’s Ben Thanh
Address: 8 Thủ Khoa Huân, Phường Bến Thành, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam
Pizza 4P’s Phu My Hung
Address: MD2 Đại lộ, Nguyễn Văn Linh, Quận 7, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam
Pizza 4P’s Le Thanh Ton
Address: 8/15 Lê Thánh Tôn, Bến Nghé, Quận 1, Quận 1 Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam
Pizza 4P’s Hai Ba Trung
Address: 151b Hai Bà Trưng, Phường 6, Quận 3, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam
Chocolate bars, chocolate pastries and chocolate drinks in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City…How does it sound? For a chocolate lover like Marion it was amazing to find Maison Marou, a cafe serving their own chocolate. The name of the chocolate brand is Marou Faiseurs de Chocolat, and they source their chocolate beans from several provinces in Vietnam.
In the cafe you not only have the chance to indulge in delicious chocolate, you also get the chance to see when they make the tasty chocolate cakes in the Marou chocolate factory. Expect to pay around 100 000 VND for a pastry but for a chocolate lover it is for sure worth to eat the best chocolate you can find in Vietnam, or maybe even in the world!
Address: 169 Calmette, Phường Nguyễn Thái Bìn, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam
